The Birth of BDR-101, the World’s first Blu-ray Writer Drive

In 2005, we developed the world’s first blu-ray writer drive BDR-S101 and offered it to a Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) affiliated manufacturer for use in game software development. In the following year, we began commercial production of BDR-101A for general OEM, which was another accomplishment where we were the first to bring the product to the global market. The use for blu-ray disk (BD) drives at the time was strictly industrial (checking BD titles, etc.) or for development of equipment, such as blu-ray equipment or storage media. The production runs were also limited. The BD drives in those days were quite pricy, because the development of semiconductor lasers and other key devices was still in its infancy. What's more, personal computers didn't have the capacity to play blu-ray disks, so blu-ray disk drives had to wait for further technological progress for their popularization.

  2009---The Year of Progress

In late 2009, the technical challenges facing blu-ray and high-definition imaging, specifically the issues of drive and PC performance, software and peripheral devices, were cleared in rapid succession, and finally the time had come for blu-rays to be delivered to many more customers. Now digital cameras that can shoot high-definition videos are prevalent, and high-resolution images are considered standard for home-use movie cameras. Digital terrestrial broadcasting has displaced analog broadcasts, and high-resolution picture quality is beginning to be the norm.
To an Age of Using Blu-ray on Personal Computers

When we developed the blu-ray writer drives in 2005, the industrial-purpose products weren’t a simple apparatus for the use of the general public. However, now that the PC environment is set and we have the blu-ray drives and disks that we can confidently recommend to our customers, let us introduce you to some of the recommended ways to use our drive.
  Feel Assured with Blu-ray Recording

Although the blu-ray standard has experienced some twists and turns, today, it has become a global standard supported by a great number of companies worldwide. As the case was with DVDs, Pioneer has participated in the development of the standard since its inception as a proposing manufacturer. Like the current blu-ray drives maintain compatibility with CDs and DVDs, it can be expected that future standards will continue to be compatible with current blu-ray disks, even if an upgrade to the standard was implemented, which makes it a user-friendly standard. Furthermore, Pioneer’s blu-ray drives are developed with an eye toward write quality that supports long-time preservation and the stability of drive operation, a principle that makes our drives particularly well suited to storage and distribution. (Please note that recording quality depends on the conditions of the media you are using. For more information, please see our supported media list.)
