The time for playing post-BD quality videos on high performance PCs is just around the corner

If you combine a computer on which you can play BD videos and a high-speed BD drive, you can easily get a data transfer speed and image processing power that surpasses the existing BD standard. Such an age is just around the corner. Although BD videos are popular for their high picture quality, not a lot of people know that shooting high-definition pictures using professional equipment can produce an even higher picture quality with a higher data capacity than the BD standard.

Actually, in the process of creating professional videos, the original data recorded and edited using professional high-definition editing equipment is compressed to the BD standard in order to record it to blu-ray disks. Lately, compression technology has improved so that in most cases the difference between the original image and compressed image is not easily distinguishable, although it depends on the specific picture. However, if you knew the picture quality of the original image, you cannot help noticing the degradation.

We aspire to deliver videos with a higher picture quality and to make information included in high-definition library shots available for viewing. With this goal in mind, we combine the efforts of Pioneer employees and outside people who create picture quality evaluation demo disks in order to study the playback of BD-ROMs with high-definition videos on personal computers and the making of libraries from high-definition video materials.

As the products of these attempts are not playable on normal BD players, but by playing them as BD-ROM data at high speeds on a BD drive using a high-end computer and video playback software that can utilize that PC capacity, videos of the near-original picture quality can be delivered to users. To construct the ideal audio/video system, we feel that the time when people use Pioneer’s silent, high-end computers with Pioneer’s silent BD drive installed instead of a BD player is right around the corner.
